Yes, You Can Stay Home

You can absolutely stay in your home during a roof replacement. Most homeowners do. The work happens entirely on the exterior, and your crew won't need to enter your house. That said, it's not exactly a peaceful day at home. Here's what to expect and how to prepare.

Expect Significant Noise

This is the biggest impact. Roof replacement involves:

  • Tear-off: Prying and scraping old shingles off the deck. Loud, percussive noise directly above your rooms.
  • Hammering/nailing: Pneumatic nail guns firing thousands of nails throughout the day. This is the loudest part.
  • Material handling: Bundles of shingles being moved and dropped on the roof surface.
  • Debris falling: Old shingles and materials sliding off the roof into the dumpster.

The noise typically runs from 7-8 AM to 5-6 PM. If you work from home on calls or need quiet, plan to work elsewhere on installation day. A library, coffee shop, or co-working space is a good backup.

How to Prepare Your Home

  1. Remove wall hangings: The vibration from hammering can shake items off walls. Take down anything fragile, especially on the top floor.
  2. Cover attic items: During tear-off, some dust and small debris may fall through into the attic. Cover anything stored there.
  3. Move vehicles: Your driveway will be occupied by a dumpster and material delivery. Park on the street.
  4. Protect landscaping: Note any delicate plants or garden features near the foundation. Let your crew know so they can place protective tarps.
  5. Secure outdoor furniture: The crew needs clear access around the house perimeter. Move patio furniture and grills temporarily.

Pets During Roof Replacement

Pets are usually the most affected family members. The noise and vibration can cause anxiety, especially in dogs and cats. Our recommendations:

  • Dogs: Arrange a doggy daycare, take them to a friend's house, or keep them in an interior room with white noise playing. The noise is stressful for most dogs.
  • Cats: Keep cats indoors. The open activity around the house perimeter makes it easy for indoor/outdoor cats to escape or get spooked.
  • Other pets: Fish, birds, and small animals are generally fine inside. Cover bird cages if the bird seems stressed.

Safety During Installation

  • Keep children away from the work zone. Nails, debris, and heavy materials present a hazard. The area directly around the house is a no-go zone during work hours.
  • Don't go on the roof. Leave that to the professionals with safety equipment.
  • Watch for nails. Despite magnetic sweeps after completion, occasional nails end up in the yard or driveway. Wear shoes outdoors for a few days after the project.

Plan ahead: The better you prepare, the smoother the day goes. Most of our customers tell us the anticipation was worse than the reality. The crew arrives, works efficiently, and by the end of the day (or 2-3 days for larger homes), you have a brand new roof. See the full timeline for what to expect.
