Roofing Term
Eave
An eave is defined as the lower edge of a roof that overhangs the exterior wall of a building, providing protection from rain and directing water away from the foundation. Eave overhang typically ranges from 6 to 24 inches depending on architectural style and climate. The eave is the primary location for ice dam formation in cold climates and is where drip edge, ice and water shield, and gutter systems are installed.
