Owens Corning: Our Preferred Shingle Brand
Full disclosure: SquareDash uses Owens Corning shingles as our primary product line. We chose them after extensive testing and comparison. Here's why, and an honest assessment of where they fall short.
Owens Corning Duration (Our Standard)
Cost: $3.15 - $3.65/sq ft installed | Warranty: Lifetime limited | Wind rating: 130 mph
The Duration is our go-to shingle for the "Better" tier. The standout feature is the SureNail Technology strip: a wide, fabric nailing strip that gives installers a clear, reinforced target. This reduces improper nailing (the #1 cause of shingle blow-offs) and provides 130 mph wind resistance.
- Class A fire rating
- StreakGuard algae resistance (10-year coverage)
- TruDefinition color depth
- Available in 18+ colors
The SureNail strip is the real differentiator. In our experience, Duration shingles have the lowest blow-off rate of any architectural shingle we've installed.
Owens Corning Oakridge (Budget Pick)
Cost: $2.45 - $2.90/sq ft installed | Warranty: Lifetime limited | Wind rating: 110 mph
Oakridge is Owens Corning's entry-level architectural shingle. At $2.45/sq ft, it's priced close to 3-tab shingles but delivers significantly better performance. For homeowners on a strict budget who want to avoid 3-tab, Oakridge is the sweet spot.
The main trade-off vs Duration: lower wind rating (110 mph vs 130 mph) and no SureNail strip. In low-wind areas, this doesn't matter much. In storm-prone regions, spend the extra for Duration.
Owens Corning Duration FLEX (Hail Protection)
Cost: $3.75 - $4.30/sq ft installed | Warranty: Lifetime limited | Wind rating: 130 mph | Impact: Class 4
Duration FLEX uses SBS-modified asphalt that stays flexible in cold temperatures and absorbs hail impact without cracking. It carries a Class 4 impact rating, the highest available.
Why it matters: in hail-prone states, many insurance companies offer 10-35% premium discounts for Class 4 roofs. A homeowner paying $2,400/year in premiums could save $240-840/year, meaning the Duration FLEX upgrade pays for itself in 3-5 years through insurance savings alone.
Warranty: What's Actually Covered
Owens Corning's warranty structure is straightforward:
- Years 1-10: Full manufacturing defect coverage, no proration
- Years 10+: Prorated coverage based on original cost
- SureStart coverage: First 10 years include labor reimbursement (Duration and FLEX only)
- Transferable: One-time transfer to new homeowner within first 60 days of home sale
Compared to GAF, OC's warranty terms are very similar. The main advantage is the SureStart labor coverage in the first decade.
How They Stack Up Against Competitors
Owens Corning Duration vs the field:
- vs GAF Timberline HDZ: Similar pricing and performance. Duration's SureNail strip vs GAF's LayerLock. Both are excellent. OC edges ahead on nailing reliability; GAF edges ahead on algae coverage.
- vs CertainTeed Landmark: Landmark is competitive on price but has less market penetration. CertainTeed's contractor network is smaller, which can affect availability.
- vs Atlas StormMaster: Atlas has strong impact resistance but lower brand recognition and fewer color options.
Our recommendation: Duration for most homes, Oakridge for tight budgets, Duration FLEX for hail zones. All three are reliable choices backed by a manufacturer we trust. See your price with Owens Corning shingles.
